The Z4 has been updated with an exterior design tweak, an enhanced specification and a wider range of options. Fitting with BMW's current design language, the revised Z4 boasts a new kidney grille, now with a horizontal inner structure, reinforcing the impression of a wide front end. The three-section air intakes in the front apron are familiar from other M models, distinctive side-sill contouring and a rear apron, with bold edging at either side, also feature. The side air intakes – which guide air to the air curtains, reducing turbulence in the wheel arches – have been remodelled. Interesting, the M Sport trim level is now standard in the UK across the four-cylinder models. Sticking with the exterior, the 2023 BMW Z4 M40i G29 features exterior mirror caps in Cerium Grey and trapezoidal tailpipe trims for the exhaust system.

The range of exterior paint finishes for the Z4 has also been revised. As well as Thundernight metallic, Portimao Blue metallic and Skyscraper Grey metallic – available for the roadster for the first time, the selection also includes four others spanning a broad spectrum between white, black, red and grey – including BMW Individual paint finish Frozen Grey metallic. The fabric soft- top of the BMW Z4 will continue to be offered in Anthracite Silver effect as an alternative to the standard black. Also new to the options list are the M lights Shadow Line, which can be ordered in conjunction with the (also optional) Adaptive LED Headlights.

Three petrol engines are available for the new 2023 BMW Z4 G29. The four-cylinder engine powering the sDrive20i teams up, as standard, with the eight-speed Steptronic Sport transmission ZF8HP. With a maximum output of 197hp and peak torque of 236 lb-ft, the 2023 BMW Z4 sDrive20i G29 sprints from rest to 62 mph in 6.6-seconds. Meanwhile, the top-of-the-range model, with the six- cylinder M TwinPower Turbo technology engine, is the M40i. The 3.0-litre 340hp unit develops peak torque of 369lb ft and powers the Z4 M40i G29 from 0 to 62mph in 4.5-seconds.
