2022 SsangYong Korando E-Motion tasked with turnaround

SsangYong Motors is accelerating plans to launch its first all-electric model, badged Korando e-Motion. The move has been sped up to help save the brand, which filed for bankruptcy in Korea last year, and the new model is expected to arrive later this year. This is a few months behind European deliveries, but SsangYong has also been hit by the global shortage of semi-conductors.

Developed under the project name E100, the Korando e-Motion went into full-scale production on 14 June. It will be the first midsized electric SUV available in Korea, with ‘the spacious interior convenience of a family car’. An image released by SsangYong shows that the e-Motion will be distinguished from the standard Korando by blue accents, including its front lip spoiler and door mirror caps. The e-Motion will also get a closed grille design and unique alloy wheels.

The brand has also committed to accelerating the development of its J100 project, which is a medium-sized battery electric SUV. Previewed in concept design sketches and planned to enter production in 2022, the J100 has a bolder design. It features heavily flared wheel arches and a striking nose, with a narrow-slotted grille flanked by slim LED headlights. It also appears to have a contrasting roof colour, vertical rear lights and roof rails for an imposing look.
