AMG EQEAMG reaffirms its commitment to EVs with the launch of two new performance four-doors

Mercedes-AMG has revealed two new electric saloons – the EQE43 4Matic and the EQE53 4Matic+. The EQE43’s twin-motor drive system produces the equivalent of 469bhp and 633lb ft of torque for a 4.2-second 0-62mph time and 130mph top speed.

The EQE53 uses special AMG motors on the front and rear axles, and generates 617bhp and 701lb ft of torque. These figures translate into a 3.5-second dash to 62mph and 137mph vmax. An optional AMG Dynamic Plus Package increases the EQE53’s output to 678bhp and torque to 737lb ft, dropping the 0-62mph time to 3.3 seconds and increasing the top speed to 149mph. The DPP also adds Race Start launch control with a special boost mode.

Thanks to the 328V high performance battery with a bespoke AMG battery management system and 90.6kWh of usable capacity, range on a single charge is 287 to 331 miles (WLTP) for the EQE43, and 276 to 322 miles for the EQE53 – all the while producing zero emissions. Visual differences from an AMG Line-spec EQE are subtle.

With a black panel grille containing vertical chrome slats, a revised rear diffuser and aerodynamically enhanced wheels, these new AMGs have a similar appearance to the AMG EQS53. Rear axle steering is standard on both the EQE43 and EQE53, improving the turning circle at low speeds, and agility and stability when travelling at a faster rate of knots. This complements the AMG Ride Control+ air suspension and AMG brake system fitted on both cars; an even higher-performing ceramic braking system is optional.

Big power, big range

Inside, there is a chunky AMG performance steering wheel and special graphics on AMG seats. The MBUX infotainment system’s hyperscreen, which debuted on the EQS and effectively turns the dashboard into one giant touchscreen, is optional. On the move, occupants are also treated to a three-mode AMG sound experience produced by a sound generator, bass actuator and special speakers. Exact pricing and specifications were not confirmed at the time of writing, but expect the EQE53 4Matic+ to cost in excess of £100,000 when it goes on sale later this year. Sadly, the EQE43 4Matic won’t be coming to the UK, according to Mercedes-Benz.

Dynamic Plus Package increases output to 678bhp/737lb ft torque.
