There are many joys and privileges that come with working on Classic & Sports Car, and being given the keys to a 1954 DB2/4 a few years ago was all of the above and more. The only slightly awkward moment I recall was negotiating my way on to the driver’s seat, over the high, wide sill, then minding the pointy end of the umbrella handbrake that was poised to gouge my skin as I posted my legs through the letterbox-like space between seat and steering wheel. Or maybe it’s just that I’m awfully uncoordinated.
From the moment I turned the key, pressed the button and the ‘six’ fired it was a dream to drive and so easy to acclimatise to. Just give the drum brakes the time they need and don’t try to rush the gearchanges. But why would you need a frantic driving style when you are cocooned in such luxury? It looked as good inside as out. From the crisp Smiths dials set in the immaculate wooden dash to the charming fabric door-pulls, before we’d even turned a wheel it felt special. Being on loan from Aston Martin Works, it was in top-notch condition – maybe as good as it gets, and probably better than new. That day came to mind when I spotted this car: it, too, is in equally fabulous condition. When Tom Hartley Jnr acquired the Aston, he asked marque expert and historian Stephen Archer to inspect and deliver a report on it. Archer states: ‘This DB2/4 has been revered, it has had a very good life thanks to having had few owners and to having been very well cared for. Perhaps above all else, it has benefited from an exceptional restoration. It presents today not only as a DB2/4 should, but it is as fine as you could wish one to be.’ Impressive. It’s not a case of history repeating; I won’t be reliving that memorable drive because this is serious lottery-win money. But I am glad that someone else will get the chance to enjoy such a wonderful example of the DB2/4. And this car’s gorgeous – and original – colour combination of ivory with a red leather interior and a red soft-top is the icing on the cake. I also can’t think of the last time I saw one in these colours, which adds to the appeal.
This matching-numbers car was with its seventh and most recent owner for 28 years, and it was with him that it was restored. In the accompanying paperwork you’ll even find the car’s factory build sheet and maintenance records from 1955, and raising the central front armest will reveal a period toolkit. It certainly sounds pretty special, and will be a treat for its next keeper.
